10 Daily Habits To Create This Year


People are rewarded in public for what they do in private. We are recognized for the things we are great at, but in order to become great at something we must practice. To become great it takes a lot of practice—even years of practice. But after a while, that practice will pay off.

In sports, athletes must practice hard before the big game if they want to see a victory. Likewise, we must work hard and practice at whatever we’re doing in order to be successful in it. You have to prepare mentally for where you want to go in life. Part of the mental preparation process involves seeing or visualizing the results you want to obtain first. Visualize yourself accomplishing the impossible. Get a picture in your head of you doing and accomplishing just that. Don’t wait for it to manifest physically first. Picture it in your mind first.

Now that you see yourself being or doing what it is you want to be or do, now it’s time to take some small steps that will bring some big changes. The small steps are necessary, but they must be consistently done. In essence, you must now develop discipline. How do you become a person of discipline? You start by developing daily habits. Discipline requires practice and repetition in your day-to-day life. Your habits is simply your daily system—that which you do when you first wake up, that which you do throughout the day, etc. When you have a certain routine you stick to it everyday without thinking about it. You might have a routine of making your bed before leaving home, drinking coffee, exercising, organizing your mail, folding clothes after the laundry, cleaning a messy kitchen after you finish cooking, taking out the trash, etc. If you don't have a daily system you follow with regards to your goals, nothing will get accomplished as far as your goals are concerned.

I read a quote by John Wooden that said, "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. The true test of a persons character is what they do when no one is watching." Wow! Powerful! What you do when no one is around and watching is who you really are. When I read this quote it was like a lightbulb came on inside of me. If I'm a clean person, it's because I'm clean when no one is watching me. If I'm a person who works out or eats healthy, I do it because it's in me, not because it's a new new year. Success is something you attract by developing success habits and disciplines. If you want more, you must become more.

Here are 10 steps to becoming a person of discipline.

  1. Start by declaring everyday that you are a person of discipline

  2. Get a journal. Write your top 10 goals to do everyday for 21 days

  3. List 10 goals that you need to do now

  4. Spend time with God

  5. Listen to a motivational or faith building message

  6. Read

  7. Exercise

  8. Review your goals and add pictures to go with them

  9. Forgive others

  10. Forgive yourself

This is just a small list of new habits to create for yourself just to get you started. Motivation is what gets you started, but discipline is what keeps you going. Let's start the new year off strong by becoming people of discipline.
